Any ideas on what this little roof thing is?It looked like it had a bunch of cameras in it. Don’t think it’s for self-driving stuff.

No, but I’d like to know too. Saw one of these in Pittsburgh the other day. I thought it was for one of the self driving cars, bet there was clearly someone in the driver’s seat, and it sure as heck looked like they were opperating the vehicle.

The only thing I could come up with is maybe Uber tracks where the vehicle goes so they have a better idea of how long it might take someone to reach their destination?

That’s a roof rack....

The self-driving cars look like a Google Maps car with the thingy on the roof.

So what’s with the flat looking box with lenses on it on top of the roof rack? I know it’s not a self-driving car.

If so, that spot is really gonna mess with the data. Probably took him half an hour to go between two lights.

Could be mapping something maybe? Don’t know.

Why does my Uber cost $700 to go four blocks? Lol

Maybe he is just storing stuff up there so it isn’t taking up space in the car since he is a taxi?

Maybe? Your guess is as good as mine.

The self driving Ubers in Pittsburgh have two occupants in addition to passenger. A human driver to correct the car if it messes up, and a tech to collect data, troubleshoot, etc.

Didn’t have anything on the roof, but yesterday I saw a Focus ST Uber. Strong choice. I always end up riding in a Dodge Caliber or something...

You know, it did have a driver and passenger. Maybe what I saw was indeed a self driver. It was a white Fusion, and the contraption looked like what a quick GIS revealed.

I have to tell my father that what we saw was indeed a self driving vehicle. He refused to believe me that it was possible.

Looks like it’s an imaging vehicle; they’re used to generate mapping data that feeds the computer driver system. Still driven manually and just take tons of data/pictures.

It’s part of their testing program for autonomous driving. There is always someone in the driver’s seat (and often times a passenger with a computer doing various geeky things too). The person may have been actually driving the vehicle when you spotted them, but I’m sure they were out doing testing of some sort - or as someone else had mentioned, maybe just imaging stuff (they’re trying to do as much of the mapping on their own too so they don’t have to license it off someone else like Google, who are also competing against them with autonomous driving so I’m sure there’s some animosity there). There are a bunch of these running around the Bay Area and in Pittsburgh too (and probably other places). Curious to see where all this goes – quite honestly I’m not rooting for them and hope someone else beats them to the punch.
